Basic Bible Lessons

What do we believe about the Bible?
It is the infallible word of God.

The Author of the Bible is the Holy Spirit.
II Peter 1:20-21
The word “Bible” is derived from the Greek word “biblos” meaning “a Book”.
The Bible is known by other titles such as, the scriptures, the writings, and the Word of God. Exodus 32:16   Mark 12:10   Heb. 4:12
John 5:47     Matt. 22:29   I Thess. 2:13
The Bible is a library of 66 books divided into two main sections; the Old Testament and the New Testaments.  The Old Testament contains 39 books and the New Testament contains 27 books.
Why do we emphasize the Bible so much?
Because it is the Word of God that does the work of God.

     III          Seven symbols are used to illustrate God’s word.
A sword; The Bible is a pointed word that convicts the hearer.
Hebrews 4:12

A hammer: The Bible is powerful and breaks the resistance of the hearer.
Jeremiah 23:29
A seed; The Bible is the living word that regenerates the hearer.
I Peter 1:23

A mirror; The Bible is a faithful word, revealing the individual to himself.
James 1:23-25
A fire; As the fire tries the metals, so God’s word tries his saints.
I Peter 1:7
A Lamp; The Bible is an illuminating light to guide us every day.

Food; The Bible is nourishing food that feeds the soul.

IV.       The Bible is necessary for true faith, salvation and assurance.

The Bible is not to be tampered with or altered.

Faith in the infallibility of the scriptures is an imperative necessity to assure:
“That your faith should not stand in the wisdome of men, but in the power of God”.  I Cor. 2:5
“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, in your hearts:  knowing this first that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.  For prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of old spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”  II Peter 1:19-21
