Basic Lesson 6

Basic Bible Lesson6
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”  II Timothy 2:15
BAPTISMPart 2  Beginning of Obedience

I. Believers Baptism – Acts 8:27-40; Acts 16:27-34

II The meaning of Baptism.
Baptism is an outward symbol of an inward reality of a genuine conversion.  When a person trusts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, he is baptized by the one true baptism.  Colossians 2:8-14 of which believer’s baptism is a picture.
The physical baptism of a Christian believer can not save nor produce forgiveness of sin because it is only an outward symbol of an inward reality.

III. Why believers baptism?

It means identification with Jesus Christ  Rom. 6:4-13
Identification in His death – Rom. 6:5
Planted together in the likeness of his death
Identification in His burial – Rom 6:4
Buried with Him by baptism
Identification in His resurrection  - Rom. 6:4
Like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
IV. Who may be baptized?

Those that have heard the Gospel and believed it.  Mark 16:16
Those whose eyes are opened.  Act 9:18
Those who have received the Holy Ghost.  Acts 10:47
Those who wish to observe all things Jesus has commanded.  Matt.28:19
There is no record of any baby ever baptized in the Bible either in the New or Old Testament.
V. How should one be baptized?

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.  Matt. 28:19
The substance used? Water only. – Acts 8:36, John 3:23
Who should perform baptism?  It should be performed by the representative of a local church.  Examples: Philip, Peter, Paul, Silas, etc.
Method – full immersion.  All examples in the Bible are by full immersion.  Matt. 3:16, Acts 8: 38-39
When should a person be baptized?  As soon as possible after conversion.  Mark 16:16

Baptism is to take a public stand with the Lord Jesus Christ; it is a public proclamation to the world that I am living for the Lord Jesus Christ.  It is not optional to the Christian, but the first act of obedience to Jesus Christ.
