The Sacrifice of Fools - Sermon notes by Rev. George Burkinshaw
Ec 5:1  “Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be
more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.”
The road to hell and destruction are paved with positive,
Presumptuous, intentions from the imagination of man's heart.
Jer 13:10  “This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which
walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing.”
The biblical truth is that every sacrifice to God that is out of
the will of the LORD and the revealed truth of God's word; is simply not accepted of him; and is evil in his sight! As this age comes to its end, is it not as when the last age came to its end?
Mal 1:6  “A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if
then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? 7 Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible. 8 And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts. 9 And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard your persons? saith the LORD of hosts. 10 Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.”
Satan’s temptation of the Lord Jesus Christ was far more reaching than understood by the casual reader of scripture; however the scholar and the body of Jesus Christ often miss the obvious truth of tempting the Lord in the sin of presumption!
Lu 4:9  “And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: 11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.”
PRESUMPTION: Is an unreasonable unbiblical confidence in divine
favor. A blind or headstrong confidence that is unreasonable,
adventurousness; a venturing to undertake something without reasonable prospect of success, or against the usual probabilities of safety; such are presumptuous sins.
Mal 1:14  “But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a
male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.”
To tempt is to incite or solicit to an evil act; to entice to
something wrong by presenting arguments that are plausible or convincing, or by the offer of some pleasure or apparent advantage as the inducement.
Ps 19:13  “Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let
them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be
innocent from the great transgression.”
Such is the wicked way that many puffed up, presumptuous Evangelists and Pastors are calling naive young men to the Gospel ministry; in the emotional excitement and folly of vain glory the gain of false honor!
Ga 5:26  “Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one
another, envying one another.”
Such evil, ungodly ministries are pregnant with fleshly desires of
gain rather than the knowledge of Jesus Christ! This generation seeks to be somebody; rather that to be a servant to somebody most glorious as the servant of men; Christ Jesus the Lord!
Mt 11:29  “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
Not only is their calling of naive young men to the Gospel ministry
abominable, but their congregations are only set on gain rather than God!
1Ti 6:5  “Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.”
The Lord contended with this same foul spirit of the flesh when
they sought the filling of the belly over the need of the soul!
Joh 6:26  “Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.”
The Gospel minister of Jesus Christ is not to be a dynamic leader,
but a humble servant of the true and living God!
2Ti 2:24  “And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient”
The calling of the ministry of Jesus Christ is not to be in the
pride of gain, but in the humility of surrender to the divine will!
Ac 9:16  “For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.”
The ministry of the Gospel for the servant of the Lord and the
surrendered church member is a covenant of sacrifice found in the sacrifice  of the cross of Christ!
Ps 50:5  “Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”
Those who look upon the glory man and not upon the glory of the
Lord are vain man worshipers, with a gaze on Hell’s deception not on Heaven's glory!
Jer 9:23  “Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his
wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: 24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.”
Today and for many years now, I have watched many a Gospel
minister wilt, compromise and quit under a savage and merciless rejection of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and of the truth of his sacred and eternal word!
Isa 53:3  “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”
So why would any gospel minister serving the Lord Jesus Christ in
the humility of his cross; exhort anyone in the excitement of vain glory and selfish gain, when our cross as a servant or member of the body is to suffer our lords rejection?
Mt 10:37  “He that loveth father or mother more than me is not
worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.”
As those who have been redeemed unto eternal life in the cross of Jesus Christ, we  are to put on Christ and serve God with our lives.  That is the will of God for our lives after our salvation; to grow in the knowledge of our Lord and savior!  Not in the Glory of self enamored men who glory in themselves!
2Pe 3:18  “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
Sadly, today many pastors and evangelists do not even know the difference between being a servant of God and the servitude of the congregation!
1Ti 1:12  “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry”
A man that is led or called of God simply cannot enter the ministry of his own will, he must be enabled of the LORD in humility; accepting his cross!
Ga 6:14  “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of
our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”
A godly humility, peace, and joy is the mark of the servant enabled of Jesus Christ to have the maturity to be a Christ-like spectacle to those who are under his preaching and teaching, and to behold his servitude to his LORD!
1Co 4:9  “For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.”
The servant of the lord is set to be a spectacle, bearing his cross,
as the Lord Jesus Christ was a spectacle to everyone as he suffered on  His cross!
1Ti 3:1   “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a
bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to
hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of
filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4 One that ruleth
well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5
(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.”
It must be a God given desire for servitude of the Lord and not a
Man-driven inspiration for vain glory and gain!
1Ti 3:1  “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.”
1Ti 3:2  “A bishop then must be blameless”
BLAMELESS.  Without fault; innocent; guiltless; not meriting
A servant must take out the garbage, if he does so he is blameless, though not sinless! If on occasion he fails his LORD’s will and repents before corruption sets; he may find grace.  If too many roots of bitterness corrupt his soul, he will be at fault and defiled!
Heb 12:15  “Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled”
Eph 5:25  “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it”
There are several revelations of the LORD to the man who is
enabled of Christ for the supernatural joy of the LORD, to sedate the deep pain and sorrow found in the rejection of the cross of Jesus Christ! The first is to love your wife as Christ loved the church; not as most ministers love their wives as needful, but rather as a gift from God!
1Co 7:15 “But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother
or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.”
If you love your wife as Christ loved the church and she leaves you because of the Lord, rejoice.  The LORD will bless you with a godly wife and a ministry of truth! If your wife leaves you because of you, get out of the ministry, you do not have the heart for it!
Mt 18:35  “So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.”
Your forgiveness of you brother’s trespass does not remove his/her accountability to God.  It removes the root of bitterness that will defile your walk!  If a saint is defiled by roots of bitterness, they cannot serve Jesus Christ from the heart.
Eph 6:6  “Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart”
Watchful; circumspect; attentive to discover and avoid danger, or to provide for safety. Take your places and be vigilant.  Be sober, be vigilant.
2Ti 4:3  “For the time will come when they will not endure sound
doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.”
Loving your wife as Christ love the church, forgiving men their
Trespasses, and sound doctrine are the three revelations of God to his servants to receive his peace and Joy. Why should God send any man his peace and joy to enable him to endure affliction for the propagating of fables and living lies?
Jer 23:32  “Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.”
To learn how to rightly divide the word, I recommend: Dispensational Truths by Clarence Larkin and...
The Bible Believers Guide to Dispensationalist by David E. Walker.
2Ti 2:15  “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
After learning to rightly divide the Word and getting to know the
Book, the rest of a saint’s, and most of all the servant of the Lord’s life; is to be spent to know and learn of the God that wrote the Book!
Jer 24:7  “And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.”
OF GOOD BEHAVIOUR (Good behavior in the house of God is a
1Ti 3:15  “But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou
oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.”
Ac 20:35  “I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
        APT TO TEACH:
To instruct; to inform; to communicate to another the knowledge of that of which he was before ignorant.
1Ti 4:10  “For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. 11 These things command and teach.”
1Ti 3:3 NOT GIVEN TO WINE
God gives his peace and his joy to those Christians who walk in the
spirit to endure the trials and rejection of life, as they are strengthened by enduring chastisement!
Eph 5:18  “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be
filled with the Spirit”
        NO STRIKER
It is very good to have a temper; it is only sin to lose it! The man
enabled of God is to have a temper and a very strong one at that;  a temper that is hardened against sin and unrighteousness!
Jas 1:20  “For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.”
A man of God must, at times and in proper authority, discipline the unruly.  However, he is to be moderate and not vengeful or vindictive!  See how he who could have called ten thousand angels, only used a scourge to drive out the money changers.
Joh 2:15  “And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; 16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise. 17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.”
The sin of the hireling is to use the ministry for gain as Gehazi!
2Ki 5:26  “And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?27 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.”
It is not a sin to work in order to stay in the ministry. The Apostle Paul did!
Ac 20:34  “Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.”
In all labor that is in the will of God; the laborer is worth of his
Pr 28:20  “A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that
maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.”
Lu 21:19 “In your patience possess ye your souls.”
        NOT A BRAWLER:
        A noisy quarreling fellow
Pr 15:1  “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. not covetous”
        Godly love must be very strong and firm in grace and truth;
uncompromising, but not malicious and brutish!
1Ti 3:4 “ONE THAT RULETH WELL HIS OWN HOUSE, having his children in subjection with all gravity”
A house not under God's control is simply out of control!
1Ti 3:5  “(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)”
Children living in the home after a godly manner testify clearly to
a man's diligence in  his servitude to Jesus Christ!
Pr 12:24  “The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the
slothful shall be under tribute.”
Children living in the home out of control reveal revelations of
spiritual declension!
Jer 5:31  “The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?”
Eli lost his house, children and ministry because he would not
restrain his children.
1Ti 3:6  “Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into
the condemnation of the devil.”
A novice is one who is new in any business; one unacquainted or
unskilled; one in the rudiments; a beginner.
Mt 13:55  “Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?”
The lord Jesus Christ entered the ministry at about thirty years of age, after a servitude of about eighteen years in Josephs carpenter shop!
Mt 20:28  “Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
The priests did not start service until thirty years of age! After
thirty sacrificial years in the congregation of the LORD, learning of the LORD!
Nu 4:23  “From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old
shalt thou number them; all that enter in to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.”
I believe it would be very unwise to even consider ordaining men into the gospel ministry who have not yet had the responsibility of a wife and previously maintained a humbling service in a local church for a full number of godly years.
1Ti 3:7  “Moreover he must have a good report of them which are
without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.”
The Lord Jesus Christ is the bishop of our souls.  As the head of the church, he came and suffered as a servant, and was obedient unto the death of the cross!
1Pe 2:25  “For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.”
If we are to be Shepherds and Bishop's before the Shepherd and
Bishop of our soul, should we not seek and desire his person and spirit? Is this not what we must teach those who we are called to minister unto?
Heb 7:26  “For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens”
Whose spirit comes from the pastors of the lords flocks?
Jer 10:21  “For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.”
